Planet Alpha is set to be Team 17’s 100th game

Team 17 has been a prolific developer and independent publisher since 1990, having a hand in fantastic games throughout the past 27 years. Games like Overcooked, the Worms series, The Escapists, and the Alien Breed series, just to name a few. On September 4th, Team 17 is set to hit an astounding milestone of 100 games under their belt by publishing independent developer Adrian Lazar’s Planet Alpha on the Xbox One, PlayStation4, Switch, and PC.

CEO of Team 17, Debbie Bestwick, states, “I’m appreciative, humbled and honoured to work with talented developers in bringing their wonderful creations to fans everywhere. We’re just as passionate and excited for the next 100 games!” Team 17 has put together an excellent video taking you on a trip down memory lane as they show off their past 99 titles.

However, Planet Alpha is so much more than just a milestone for Team 17. It’s a testament to both the incredible intuitiveness of modern game engines and the dedication of one person to see a project to fruition. Adrian Lazar is the lead developer of Planet Alpha, but as a professional game artist by trade, he has no programming background to speak of.

In 2013, Lazar began work on a side project that would later become Planet Alpha in the Unity engine, before moving on to the Unreal Engine 4 with its Blueprint Visual Scripting melding better with his outside view on programming.

Despite Planet Alpha being Lazar’s first whack at programming, it’s not his first rodeo when it comes to game art and style. Partnering with a small team of like-minded artists, Lazar created a spectacle to behold with Planet Alpha. The titular planet is lush and vibrant with plenty of intrigue surrounding its beauty. Lazar says “Planet Alpha is the work of passion of a small but very ambitious team. We are building something special and we’re putting everything we have into it,” and the end product is showing that work pay off.
